After a wonderfully successful 12th season at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach, we are excited about our return to this venue in 2012 for our 13th season. Following the wisdom of the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” we will again be doing just two shows: a major musical and a comedy. As noted elsewhere on the website, our season will be opening slightly later (July 9th) and running a bit longer than last year (closing August 18th). With a few more shows we hope to avoid having to turn away many people as we did last year with all shows for the last few weeks being sold out. Don’t risk being disappointed this year and buy your tickets early! We will also be featuring the performance of our Teen Musical Theatre program in the final week.
The musical, the time-honoured classic Hello, Dolly! under the direction of our co-founder Gary Brown promises to be a real audience pleaser. Gary has directed many shows for us over the years – most recently last-year’s smash hit Murdered to Death and the musical Little Shop of Horrors (2009). And once again we are excited to have the rest of our creative team of Barry Miller as the Musical Director, Hilary Whelton as Vocal Director and Donna Wilkins as Choreographer back.
The comedy this year is a new one – Becky’s New Car. The rights, for which we have been eagerly waiting for over a year, just became available. One reviewer calls it “… a thoroughly original comedy with serious overtones; a devious and delightful romp down the road not taken.” Another says “It has, like Yogi Berra once suggested, a person coming to a fork in the road and taking it.” I will be directing the show – my third for B2B following Maggie’s Getting Married (2010) and The Foreigner (2009).
The two shows will alternate throughout the summer – again calling on the creative genius of Set Designer and Builder Roger Lappin to solve the problem of designing two sets alternating in the same space. And of course the many talented and dedicated participants on stage and behind the scenes can be counted on to bring you the top-quality live theatre you have come to expect.
I hope to see you there!
